Overall Observations:
Over the past five weeks we have been studying HR from the outside in. There are four waves of HR evolution; they are HR administration, HR practices, HR strategy and HR outside in. To move through the waves you have to go through the six paradoxes facing HR. Paradoxes mean that HR people and departments are effective only when they can simultaneously deliver multiple outcomes. During week 1 we discussed being a strategic partner, this means HR positions itself strategically within the organization so it is not just seen as the benefits coordinator but as an actual part of the organization. There are three factors to HR effectively positioning itself strategically, they are interpreting global context this includes being business literate and connecting with key stakeholders; decoding customer expectations; and co crafting a strategic agenda. Week 2 was focused on creating a signature experience and becoming a credible activist. A signature experience is what an organization does well. HRs role is to highlight the good within the company in order to recruit the best employees. HR is a credible activist when they prove to both the employees and the organization that they can trust them. HR has to prove to all parties involved that their objective is to do best for everyone. Week 3 discussed innovators and integrators as well as well as being a change agent. HR has to change as the pace of change increases within companies. When HR becomes a change champion it adapts to the changes that are occurring that affects it organization. Week 4. During week 4 we discussed technology and the advantages of using it within the organization. Technological advances are changing the way organizations communicate internally externally. The use of technology puts organizations on a different playing field. This week we discussed growth and career development. It was discovered that to move through different stages of an organization an employee has to go through the stages of growth.
Future Relationship with HR
I learned so much over the past five weeks. When I entered the class I only thought of HR employees as the department that coordinated benefits, recruited/hired new employees, informed employees of open enrollment and other duties on the traditional scope of HR. As I have progressed through these weeks I learned that I am going to have to think outside of traditional when I enter into the HR workforce. It is going to be necessary for me to focus on outcomes and not just staffing. HR is constantly changing and as a new HR manager I will have to implement the six competencies we learned about to make myself a relevant factor in the field. Organizations think of HR as a burden, it is going to pivotal that I prove to them that HR is necessary and the job we do is not just something that can outsourced to a company that knows nothing about the organization.
Value of SHRMConnect
I loved working on SHRM. At first I was reluctant to join the group and I didn't see the benefit of getting a membership. After my first week posting and no one responding I still didn't see the point. However, after lurking for a few days I ran across a lot of useful information not just regarding the questions we were discussing, but information I could use in my current position. I was shocked by some of the questions that were asked on the forum, I couldn't believe the things people do on a job and the process a manager has to go through before they can work to correct the behavior. One particular discussion was an employee that was on leave without pay from their job but they would not contact their employer. The employer stated they had reached out to them on several occasions but the employee would not respond. My initial thought was termination, but you can't terminate an employee without going through a series of steps to cover yourself and the organization. My only regret is that I didn't engage in more discussions on the forum. I did have someone respond to my question during week 3 which excited me a lot. I am going to continue to lurk on the site even though the class is over. There were not any additional comments or posts to my SHRMConnect account for the previous weeks.
